The busses to Machu Picchu leave from the bus terminal in Aguas Calientes which is located at 5 minutes from the train station. The bus terminal lies besides the Vilcanote River and the ticket office is also located here. These are the only allowed buses on the Hiram Bingham Highway (the zigzag road leading up to Machu Picchu) and the only official public transport to the site.
The buses start leaving from 5.30AM in the morning and the last bus comes down around 4.00PM. In between these hours buses are leaving with a 5-10 minutes interval and departing on the same rate from the site back to Aguas Calientes. In order to get on the early busses, it is recommended to be at the bus station at least 30 minutes before you would like to depart.
One way the trip will take about 20 minutes over a zigzag road with some sheer drops at the sides. The views are only getting more and more impressive as you get closer to the site of Machu Picchu and the altitude difference with the Vilcanote River increases substantially. The total price for the buses is US$8 per person for a return ticket. In case you would like to be among the first to visit the site in the morning, it is recommendable to be at the bus terminal at least 30 minutes before the first bus departs. In the high season this can be up to one hour in advance. The site does not open until 6.00AM so the first bus will arrive just before opening of the site.
